Since we moved to Orlando, we had heard from several friends how fun the Brevard Zoo is, and we had been meaning to go. We finally made the time and had a fantastic day.
The Brevard Zoo is a small zoo and conservation hub that is a 45 minute drive from Orlando, Florida. It is a great day trip and you can also enjoy a few hours at the beach, or a nice seafood lunch. Here you will not encounter the massive theme park crowds or traffic. It truly is relaxing and fun!
This zoo is committed to conservation and education. The zoo has been involved in restoring native oysters and mangroves in the Indian River to ensure cleaner water and shorelines. They also offer “Zoo School” to education tens of thousands of children each year.
You may think it’s just a zoo, however it is unique in that you can get up close and experience the different wildlife. We enjoyed the kayak tour, in which you can kayak past giraffe’s, rhinos, lemurs, turtles, and birds.
My favorite part of the zoo is the giraffe observation and feeding deck. You can get up close to the giraffes and feed them lettuce and sweet potatoes. The giraffes were gentle and sweet animals. It was so interesting to see the giraffes from up top and be able to interact.
The Brevard Zoo also offers many packages. You can zip line, feed the lorikeet and cockatiels, take a train ride, play in the splash pad, ride paddle boats, and experience educational encounters with the animals. If you come in October they also have the Boo at the Zoo Halloween event and offer trick or treating and other activities for the entire family.
We are glad we took the time to enjoy this small zoo. We hope that if you come to Florida, you will take a break from the theme parks and visit fun local spots like this one to get a good feel for the real Florida.
