8 Reasons to Take a Staycation

Those who follow our blog know that since moving to Brazil, Dale and I have been on the go. Well, recently we hit the wall and needed a little R&R so we decided instead of traveling we would take a staycation.

We went out to eat and explored the city of Joinville as if we were tourists. It turned out that we had a blast! We explored the city center, rural areas, and even went to some local events. A friend’s band was playing one night at a bar we had wanted to go to. We had such a great time visiting our city like tourists we decided to list 8 reasons why everyone should take a staycation.

Change of Perspective

Pretend you are a tourist in your own city or town. See your city or town with new eyes. Visit places you are always too busy to check out. How many historical or interesting places exist in your town or city? Have you visited all of them? I lived in Orlando, Florida for five years and I still regret not taking the short drive to visit NASA in Cape Canaveral!

Have the Fun of Planning a Vacation

I absolutely love planning vacations. The planning is one of my favorite things to do and gets me really excited and pumped up for the trip. Have you ever researched the top places to visit in your city or town? For our staycation I used TripAdvisor and researched Joinville.

Comforts of Home

I’m sorry, but no hotel room is ever as comfortable as my own home. Hotel pillows are never the same as my own pillows. How nice is it to be able to spend a day or weekend out touring and be able to return and sleep in your own bed!

Less Stress

A staycation is by far much less stressful than worrying about what to pack, getting to the airport on time, figuring out how to get from point A to point B, etc. You feel less compelled to get your moneys’ worth out of your vacation and cram a bunch of activities into a short amount of time.

Saves Time

While taking a staycation, you cut down on travel time. You can also go at your own pace. There is no need to rush. Feeling tired? Go home and take a nap!

Great for any Budget

Yes, you can take a luxurious staycation and book massages, hotel room, etc. or you can participate in free activities that your town or city has to offer. There are plenty of free or cheap events in most towns and cities and all you need is a newspaper to find them.

Discover new Places in your Area

There are lots of places in your town or city you have never been. We were excited to discover some really cool street art I had not seen before - and even got meet and watch one of the local artists work! Also we watched a friend’s rock band play at a really cool bar that is worth returning to in the future. You may discover a new restaurant that turns out to be a favorite. There are lots of hidden gems in every city and town.

Minimize your impact on the Environment

A short drive or bike ride leaves a smaller carbon footprint than flying or driving long distances.

Great way to Unplug and Recharge

A staycation is a great way to unplug from social media and recharge your battery. Even though we spent the weekend in our city, when it was time to return to work, it felt as if we took a nice relaxing vacation. We felt recharged. When you travel long distances, often when you return to work, you feel worn out.
